Pioneering work across the Atlantic — Our first international project in Canada
With the Gunn's Hill wind farm in Ontario, we ventured into the North American market in 2016 — and thus realized our first foreign project. In close collaboration with our Canadian team led by Helmut Schneider, now President of Prowind Canada Inc., a community wind farm was created that sets standards.
Ten MM92 wind turbines, each 145 meters high and with an individual output of 1.8 MW, together deliver a total installed capacity of 18.5 MW. This supplies around 22,760 households with clean electricity — sustainably, reliably and jointly.
We are particularly proud of the strong commitment of the population: 49 percent of the project is owned by citizens — that corresponds to 8.9 million CAD. A further 10 percent of the shares were awarded to the region's First Nation, combined with an additional citizen capital of 1.8 million CAD. The idea of citizen energy was thus successfully brought to the Canadian province.
In 2015, OCEC®, the citizens' cooperative behind the project, was awarded the “Community Project of the Year” prize — a milestone for our international commitment and strong proof of the power of the community.
“Gunn's Hill is more than just our first foreign project — it is a powerful symbol of how citizen energy connects people, crosses borders and has an impact worldwide. ”
As we continue to work towards a more sustainable future, we recognize that education plays a vital role in the growth and success of the renewable energy sector. In support of this vision, Gunn’s Hill Windfarm is once again pleased to offer an Educational Bursary of up to $4,000 for Indigenous students, including Members of the Six Nations of the Grand River, who are enrolled in renewable energy programs for the upcoming academic year.
Follow this link for bursary information package for eligible students. The deadline for submission of applications is August 15, 2025.
Indigenous communities have long been stewards of the environment, and we are proud to support their continued leadership in sustainable development. We hope this bursary helps empower the next generation of leaders in renewable energy.
